The Law of Jante (Jantelagen)

"Jantelagen" (The Law of Jante) was formulated by the Danish-Norwegian author Aksel Sandemose in his 1933 novel A Fugitive Crosses His Tracks (En flyktning krysser sitt spor / En sjöman går iland). The film Misery Harbour (Flykten från Jante) is loosely based on this work.

The law describes a pattern of group behavior towards individuals within Nordic communities that negatively portrays and criticizes individual success and achievement as unworthy and inappropriate. Here are the ten rules:

  1. You shall not think you are anything special.
  2. You shall not think you are as good as we are.
  3. You shall not think you are smarter than we are.
  4. You shall not imagine yourself better than we are.
  5. You shall not think you know more than we are.
  6. You shall not think you are more important than we are.
  7. You shall not think you are good at anything.
  8. You shall not laugh at us.
  9. You shall not think anyone cares about you.
  10. You shall not think you can teach us anything.

In Swedish cinema, characters are often shaped by these unspoken rules—most notably the protagonist Yngve in A Summer Tale.

Jantelagen

"Jantelagen" formulerades av den dansk-norske författaren Aksel Sandemose i boken En flykting korsar sitt spår (En sjöman går iland), som filmen Flykten från Jante är löst baserad på.
