Where the Rainbow Ends (1999)

Director:
Richard Hobert
Starring:
Göran Stangertz, Rolf Lassgård, Camilla Lundén, Pernilla August, Tommy Körberg
Genre:
Swedish Drama / Musical Elements
Rating:
Warm everyday drama in a caravan setting.

Richard Hobert's sixth film in his series on the seven deadly sins deals with the powerful forces that govern our lives and our tireless pursuit of happiness. Hobert makes films about the everyday person—heroes and heroines determined to survive and believe in a better life.

Pernilla August makes a strong impression with her spirited performance, and the musical within the film is a treat for both ears and eyes.

In this film, Mikael (Göran Stangertz) is on the verge of realizing his life's dream of staging a musical. The production looks promising with stars like Tommy Körberg and Peter Jöback, but funds are drying up. Meanwhile, Catti (Camilla Lundén) is pushed to the limit when the bailiffs seize everything in her shop.

They end up living in a caravan by the harbor, where they meet Tove (Pernilla August), an academic who has been cast out of her secure life following a divorce. I particularly appreciate Hobert's warmly portrayed, strong everyday women.

Pernilla August won a Guldbagge for this role. Read more about the 1999 Guldbagge Awards here.

Editor's Note (2026): Hobert’s series on the seven deadly sins was a monumental project in Swedish cinematic history. Seeing Pernilla August here, filmed around the same time as her role in Star Wars: Episode I, highlights her incredible range.
