Excellent acting, but I don't buy the story...

Desirée (Elisabet Carlsson) is a refined librarian living a strictly minimalist life. Benny (Michael Nyqvist) is a rugged farmer living among manure and flyspecks. They meet at the cemetery while visiting adjacent graves, and despite being polar opposites, Desirée is struck by a passion she has previously only read about in books.

Benny thinks Desirée is just as beautiful and well-built as his favorite cow, "Maggan," used to be...

This is a warm, loving comedy featuring excellent performances. Michael Nyqvist possesses a unique, fantastic charisma and rightfully earned a Guldbagge award for this role. However, unfortunately... I just don't buy the story.

Editor's Note (2026): Based on Katarina Mazetti’s best-selling novel, this film remains a milestone in Swedish romantic dramedy. Iva’s skepticism regarding the "story" mirrored contemporary critics who found the clash between high-culture urbanism and rural farming a bit exaggerated.
