A breathtaking adventure about defying one's time.

The gifted Johanna lived during the 800s, a time when a woman's lot was to work hard, bear children, and be subordinate to men in all things. Women were not permitted an education, but Johanna managed to defy medieval society and learn to read and write.

When her brother is murdered by Vikings, she assumes his identity and dresses in men's clothing. She becomes Johannes Anglicus and enters the monastery of Fulda, where she trains in the healing arts. She eventually makes her way to Rome and becomes a medical advisor in the Vatican. Who will become the new Pope when the old one dies? Will it be Johanna?

A breathtaking adventure based on the novel by Donna Woolfolk Cross.
